What Westbound Is About
With the Civil War going on, Captain John Hayes is given an unusual assignment: to get the stagecoach line running again so that gold from California can reach the banks of the Union. The line passes through a small Colorado town, and the town is in the hands of Southern sympathisers. As Hayes works to open the route, the town tries everything to stop him. This is one of the westerns Budd Boetticher made with Randolph Scott, and it runs only sixty-nine minutes. It is counted the least discussed of the Boetticher and Scott films, because Burt Kennedy, who wrote the others, is not on this one. Even so the shape is the same: a man who says little, a narrow town and a reckoning. Virginia Mayo and Karen Steele are in the cast.
