What Decision at Sundown Is About
Decision at Sundown is the third and most unusual entry in the seven film cycle Budd Boetticher made with Randolph Scott, following Scott's Bart Allison as he arrives in the town of Sundown on the wedding day of Tate Kimbrough, the town boss he blames for his wife's death, to take revenge. The film stands out as a dark, hopeless revenge story that largely dismantles the myth of the western hero. Who it's for: anyone drawn to the Boetticher-Scott cycle's dark, morally ambiguous questioning of classic western heroism. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a clear hero and villain divide and a satisfying victory, since the film foregrounds the emptiness of revenge instead.
