What The River Is About
Frank Borzage’s film is about the passion that forms between a country boy who knows nothing of the world and a woman from the city who knows a great deal, and it is often called one of the most erotic of silent films. That it exists at all is close to an accident: the opening, three scenes and the whole of the final reel, which carried the climax, are gone. Working with the cinémathèques of Switzerland and Luxembourg, the Munich Filmmuseum built a reconstruction out of the forty five surviving minutes, bridging the gaps with stills and explanatory titles. Charles Farrell and Mary Duncan play the leads. It was a Fox production and opened in December 1928.
