What The Mortal Storm Is About
In a German university town in 1933 the birthday of the respected Professor Roth is being celebrated, and everyone at the table loves each other. After Hitler comes to power the same table breaks apart: his stepsons join the party, the professor is dismissed on account of his race, and his daughter Freya and Martin, who loves her, try to leave the country. Frank Borzage made it in 1940, while the war was still not America's concern, and showed a camp directly. The words Nazi and Jew are never spoken in the film, which the studio did not want, but what is being described is plain. James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan star. Germany banned every MGM film because of it. Who it is for: viewers who like prewar Hollywood's political films and classic melodrama. Who it is not for: anyone who will find the coded telling insufficient by today's measure.
