What The Russian Revolution Is About
The documentary starts in 1881 and follows the paths of two families side by side: the Romanovs on the throne and the Ulyanovs. Lenin's older brother is executed for taking part in a plot against the tsar. From that personal rupture the film traces the road that leads to 1917. The telling is short and quick; the running time is under an hour. Cal Seville's documentary frames the revolution not as an argument about ideology but as an encounter between two families. That choice makes the subject legible, but it also simplifies it; historians debate the causes of the revolution in a far wider frame. Archive material and dramatised reconstruction are used together. The tone is the familiar one of the documentary channels.
