What The Sarnos: A Life in Dirty Movies Is About
The documentary follows Joe Sarno, a director who left a mark on the erotic cinema of the sixties and seventies, and his wife and business partner Peggy, over the course of a year. Sarno is eighty-eight and trying to make one more film: a woman-centred picture in his old manner. The camera goes with them from a winter Manhattan to their summer place in Sweden. The film traces how the genre slid from softcore into hardcore and where Sarno sits in that history; his ambitions regularly outran what the genre required of him, and that mismatch is the interesting part. What stands at the centre, though, is a partnership of more than fifty years: Peggy was once an actress and then took part in every stage of production. Wiktor Ericsson directed. John Waters and Annie Sprinkle appear on camera.
