What The Sea Hawk Is About
Oliver Tressilian, an English gentleman, loses everything and finds himself chained to an oar as a galley slave. When he gets out of that he becomes the captain of a Moorish fighting ship; he has changed his name, sails under another flag and makes war on the country he left behind. The account is a revenge story and at the same time a story about how much of a person’s identity is theirs to choose. The film was adapted from the novel by Rafael Sabatini and contains some of the most ambitious sea sequences of the silent era. Milton Sills and Wallace Beery appear in Frank Lloyd’s hundred and twenty three minute film, completed in 1924.
