What If I Were King Is About
The king goes out into the streets of Paris disguised as a common man, looking for the treachery he is sure exists in his kingdom. In a tavern he overhears the poet Francois Villon declaring loudly why he would make a better king. Both annoyed and intrigued, he gives the man a high office at court. Villon sets to work and falls for a lady in waiting, but when the king turns against him he has to flee execution. The film tells fifteenth century France from inside the adventure genre and was adapted from a novel. Ronald Colman and Basil Rathbone appear in Frank Lloyd’s hundred and one minute American film, completed in 1938.
