What Oliver Twist Is About

Oliver, raised in an orphanage, is punished for asking for a little more food at the workhouse where he is set to work, and finally runs away to London. In the city he finds himself among a gang of child pickpockets; Fagin, who runs them, and the brutal Bill Sikes want to keep the boy in their hands. Those who protect Oliver, meanwhile, are after the trace that will lead him to his past and to who he is. The film is one of the early adaptations of Dickens’s novel and shows poverty and child labour as they were. Jackie Coogan plays Oliver in Frank Lloyd’s seventy four minute silent American film; it was completed in 1922.
