What The Secret of Kells Is About
Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey's 2009 animation follows a boy living in a ninth century abbey. His uncle is busy building a wall. The boy slips into the forest and meets a girl. The film uses the decorative language of Irish manuscripts as its visual form; the narrative prefers flatness and pattern to depth. It draws on the Book of Kells. It was nominated for an Academy Award. It is an Irish, French and Belgian production. Who it's for: those who like hand-drawn animation and a distinctive visual language. Who it's not for: families with very young children; the raid scenes are frightening.
