What The Shadow of the Tyrant Is About
In Mexico in the twenties the candidates to succeed the sitting president are being decided. But the process is less an election than a submission: the president will use any road to have his way, and those who stand against him meet abduction, betrayal and death. The account does not build the events as the story of a single bad man; it shows how a political order works and how everyone takes their own share of it. The film was adapted from a novel. The harshest part of the account is that no character manages to stay entirely outside this order. Tito Junco and Roberto Canedo appear in Julio Bracho’s hundred and twenty nine minute Mexican film, completed in 1960.
