Bajram Severdžan What The Shutka Book of Records Is About
The documentary is about the people of Shutka in Macedonia, a town built on the site of a former rubbish dump. Here everyone is the champion of something, and the film takes those claims seriously, building a book of records by their own rules. The account shows the humour, the culture and the particular ways of the Roma community, one of the poorest and most persecuted peoples in the world. The film presents nobody as a curious specimen and gives each person as far as they tell it themselves. Poverty stands in the background but is not the film’s subject. Aleksandar Manic’s seventy eight minute documentary was completed in 2005.
