Juozas Budraitis What The Sign Painter Is About
Ansis makes his living painting signs in a small Latvian town by the river, an innocent-looking trade that suits every regime, because the signs get rewritten each time hands change. The authoritarian thirties give way to Soviet occupation and then to Nazi occupation, and each time Ansis paints a new language. He is in love with Zisele, a Jewish communist, and finds himself betrothed to Naiga, a Latvian Christian. Viesturs Kairišs adapted the film from a novel by Gunārs Janovskis, who fled to Britain in 1944 when the Soviets returned. The director says plainly why the book was barely known in Latvia: it deals with Latvian complicity in the killing of Jews under the Nazis, a subject the country has not wanted to discuss. It opened in Latvia on 15 January 2020.
