The film thinks about what Bach’s music does in the world today, and does it not through a straight biography but through a sequence of loosely linked scenes. Bach teaches his son, a lorry driver plays Bach on a harmonica at the wheel, a pianist works through the Goldberg Variations in his own loft. It moves back and forth between the eighteenth, nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, and music here is not a background but the narration itself. Pere Portabella directed and co-wrote it; alongside Bach’s own works, two sonatas by Mendelssohn are used. It screened in the Orizzonti section at the Venice film festival in 2007 and took a special jury award there.
