What The Silent Enemy Is About
William Fairchild’s 1958 British film comes from the true story of Lionel Buster Crabb of the Royal Navy, by way of Marshall Pugh’s 1956 book. In the Mediterranean in 1941 and 1942, Italian frogmen riding manned torpedoes were destroying ships in harbours that had been considered safe. Crabb, a bomb disposal officer, is sent to Gibraltar to answer the threat, and the war moves underwater. When the film appeared, Crabb’s name was in the news for an entirely different reason: he had vanished in 1956 during an intelligence dive and was never found. Laurence Harvey plays him, with Michael Craig and Sidney James alongside. Fairchild wrote it as well as directing it.
