What The Sleeping Beast Within Is About
A newspaper reporter starts looking for his girlfriend’s missing father. The man had been working on a ship and disappeared after coming back. The search takes the reporter into the Chinatown of Yokohama. What he comes up against there is organised crime itself. The further he goes, the more the story of the missing man changes. He has to protect both his story and his girlfriend’s family. The film runs its crime plot in a fast and hard shape. What is shown is less the crime itself than whom that crime binds together. The eighty six minutes are compressed into a short stretch. Hiroyuki Nagato takes the lead in Seijun Suzuki’s Japanese film of 1960.
