The Flower and the Angry Waves

A young yakuza is in love with a woman promised to the head of his own clan. She has been pledged to another man. He will not accept it. Before the wedding he takes her and runs. The two of them go to Tokyo. There they live under other names. He passes himself off as a labourer. She waits tables in a restaurant. Ordinary life hides them for a while. The flight has cut them off from everything they knew. The account is set in the Taisho years, and the clothes and streets of the period set the look of the film. It is a crime story and a love story at once. Akira Kobayashi, Chieko Matsubara and Tamio Kawachi appear in the ninety two minute film, a Japanese production Seijun Suzuki finished in 1964.
