The Son of the Shark

Martin and Simon are brothers. Neither of them is even a teenager yet. Whatever they get hold of ends up broken. Martin runs away from reform school. Simon runs away from foster homes. The two of them always meet in the same place. It is a coastal town called Lignan. Everyone there knows them and nobody wants them. Their mother left the family. Martin is a dreamer and something of a poet. He imagines that he is the son of a shark. He will not let go of a book about goldfish his mother gave him. He courts a neighbour girl called Marie, first haltingly and then wildly. Simon carries a pocketknife and looks the more dangerous of the two. The film asks what is left for these children. Ludovic Vandendaele and Sandrine Blancke appear in the ninety minute film, a French, Belgian and Luxembourgish co-production Agnès Merlet finished in 1993.
