Alexander Tschernek What The Sound of Insects: Record of a Mummy Is About
A hunter finds a dried out body inside a tent in a remote part of a forest. From the notebook beside it, it becomes clear that the man went there of his own will the summer before, stopped eating, and wrote down every day until the day he died. The documentary proceeds by reading that notebook: how his body changed, how hunger turned into a kind of silence after the first days, the sound of insects outside and the aircraft passing over. The film does not argue for death; it sets itself against the man’s renunciation and argues about life. Peter Liechti’s eighty seven minute Swiss production rests on a text written from a real case and is built almost entirely out of images of landscape.
