What The Sower Is About

1852, a mountain village in Provence. Those who opposed Napoleon III's coup are rounded up, and soldiers take every man in the village away. The women are left. For months nobody comes and nobody sends word. One day the women make a promise to each other: if a man comes to the village, they will share him. Then a man really does come. Violette, the youngest, becomes close to him. What the promise actually meant emerges then. Marine Francen's first film; ninety-eight minutes, with Pauline Burlet as Violette, from a text attributed to Violette Ailhaud. Its background is a real period, when thousands of people in France were arrested and deported after the coup of 1851.
