Dolores Ibárruri E Enrique Lister C Commander Martinez de Aragón G Gustav Regler What The Spanish Earth Is About
Joris Ivens’ documentary on the Spanish Civil War ties two things together: Madrid under siege and an irrigation canal being dug in a village just outside it. That cut, binding the war to bread, land and survival, carries the whole argument of the film. It was produced by the writers’ collective Contemporary Historians, edited by Helen van Dongen and scored by Marc Blitzstein. Ernest Hemingway narrates the American version, after a first recording by Orson Welles. It takes the Republican side openly, and joins frontline reporting to the language of persuasion.
