What The Strange One Is About
Jack Garfein's first film comes from End as a Man, which Calder Willingham adapted from his own novel and play. At a military academy a cadet named Jocko DeParis builds a cool and destructive power over the others, and the film is about how that power is assembled and why nobody stops it. Ben Gazzara carried his stage role into his screen debut, and much of the cast came from the Actors Studio in New York. The scenes dealing openly with homosexuality in the source were cut by the censors and survive only as suggestion, which reviewers of the day noted. What is left is a film that looks at authority and bullying from an uncomfortably short distance.
