In the spring of 1943, in his laboratory in Basel, the Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann found something he had not been looking for. It did not take him long to realise that the molecule in his hands would reach far past the boundaries of science. Martin Witz assembled his documentary from more than fifty archives and takes the story of LSD from the beginning: a drug psychiatry pinned its hopes on in the fifties, a substance that spilled out of the clinic in the sixties, banned in the seventies, and back on the therapy table since. What it really describes is a society’s uneasy relationship with the thing.
