The Super Bob Einstein Movie

Danny Gold's 2021 documentary is about the comedian Bob Einstein. He began as a writer in the sixties, created the stuntman character Super Dave Osborne in the seventies and stayed on television with him for decades, then reached a new generation in later years through his role on Curb Your Enthusiasm. At the centre is Einstein's idea of comedy: saying absurd things while remaining completely serious and never changing expression. That was the whole trick of Super Dave; however exaggerated the crash sequences became, the character never broke. Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, David Letterman and Sarah Silverman speak. The documentary was completed after Einstein's death and is openly a memorial; there is no critical view and the weaker stretches of the career are passed over. Who it's for: those interested in American television comedy and viewers of Curb. Who it's not for: viewers new to the subject; the documentary assumes knowledge of American television history.
