The Sure Thing

A student who gets nothing he wants in his first year at university decides to travel across the country for a meeting a friend has promised him. He has to share the car with a classmate who cannot stand him. The film keeps the road structure while the narrative is most interested in the two misreading each other; both are pretending to be something else. A story that begins with the promise of sex arrives somewhere else, and the film does that without forcing it. Rob Reiner directed, with John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga. Who it's for: those who like eighties teen comedy and road films. Who it's not for: viewers who find the gender humour of the period uncomfortable.
