What The Tender Enemy Is About

Line, the daughter of Annette, is about to be married. She is engaged to a man she does not love. The household gathers for the engagement party. That evening three ghosts arrive at the house. All three are men from the past of Annette. Each of them recalls the relationship he had with her. Every one of those relationships ended badly. The ghosts watch what is going on. They see that Line is heading for the same mistake. So they decide to interfere. They look for a way to act without being seen. The story moves back and forth between past and present. The film joins the fantastical to comedy. The tone is light, with something painful underneath it. Simone Berriau and Jacqueline Daix appear in the sixty nine minute film, a French production Max Ophüls finished in 1936.
