Natalya Seleznyova What The Theme Is About
Kim Yesenin, a well known playwright, leaves Moscow for the provinces in search of a new subject and some inspiration. There he finds a life entirely unlike his own; he falls into the middle of the relationship between Sasha, a museum guide, and Andrei, who is preparing to leave for America, and against the troubles of these people he sees how invented his own concerns are. The real matter is that the man has spent years writing the plays the system wanted, and has believed in that himself. In Gleb Panfilov’s ninety eight minute Soviet film, Mikhail Ulyanov plays Yesenin and Inna Churikova plays Sasha. It was completed in 1979 but censorship kept it from release; the full version came out only in 1986 and won the Golden Bear at Berlin in 1987.
