Yana Poplavskaya V Valentina Yakunina What Vassa Is About
Gleb Panfilov’s 1983 film adapts Maxim Gorky’s 1910 play Vassa Zheleznova. Inna Churikova plays a woman who has run the family business alone for years and spends her days holding the appearance of a household together against colourless children, a disgraceful husband, an alcoholic brother and a revolutionary daughter-in-law. Panfilov presents her as neither monster nor victim; her authority and the price of it are the same thing, and Churikova plays both at once. As 1913 approaches, everything she gave her life to comes apart, and the film is clear-eyed about how little of it was worth saving. It won the Golden Prize at the Moscow festival. Panfilov returned to Gorky later in the same decade with Mother.
