What No Path Through Fire Is About
Gleb Panfilov's first feature is set during the civil war that followed the revolution of 1917. Tanya works on a hospital train, barely literate, artless and remarkably gifted; she paints, and what she paints astonishes the people around her. The film does not build her as a heroine, showing her instead as someone caught between the promise of the revolution and the reality of the war, with no idea where to put her own talent. Panfilov works in a stripped down manner unusual for Soviet cinema of the period and avoids scenes of heroism. Inna Churikova became known through this part and stood at the centre of the director's later films. The ending is left unspoiled here.
