What Mother Is About

The social ferment in Russia at the end of the nineteenth century is told as a long historical drama. The inhuman conditions of the steel mill at Sormovo drive a decent man to drink and to violence; when he starts hitting his wife, their young son Pavel stands between them. After his father’s death Pavel has to go into the same factory, but with his friends he begins reading socialist thought and organising the workers. The mother first tries to understand her son’s path and then to share it. Inna Churikova appears in a production that stays close to Maxim Gorky’s novel of 1907; Gleb Panfilov’s two hundred minute film was completed in 1990.
