What The Thin Red Line Is About
During the landing on Guadalcanal in the Pacific, Private Doll, going into his first action, steals a pistol for himself to hold down his fear. Sergeant Welsh takes him for a coward and goes at him at every opportunity. When Doll kills a soldier for the first time his conscience is shaken; the next day, silencing a machine gun post single-handed, something in him changes and he starts to resemble the sergeant. When the two are made to work together clearing mines, the platoon is caught in a raid. Andrew Marton’s ninety nine minute American film was adapted from James Jones’s novel; Keir Dullea and Jack Warden appear.
