What The Trials of Henry Kissinger Is About
The documentary takes up decisions made in the years when Henry Kissinger ran United States foreign policy: the bombing in Vietnam and Cambodia, the attempt in Chile in 1970 that ended in the killing of General René Schneider, and the support given to Indonesia's entry into East Timor in 1975. The film argues that there is personal responsibility in these events and calls for a trial. Eugene Jarecki directed the film from Christopher Hitchens's book on the same subject, and Hitchens speaks in it. Kissinger rejected the accusations and did not take part in the film; he also declined to cooperate with the Chilean investigation. Events such as the secret bombing of Cambodia and American involvement in the preparation of a coup in Chile are established by declassified documents; the limits of personal responsibility remain contested.
