What The Truffle Hunters Is About
In the forests of Piedmont in northern Italy, a handful of men in their seventies and eighties hunt the white Alba truffle. It is one of the most expensive ingredients in the world; it cannot be cultivated, only found, and only trained dogs know where it is. The men go into the woods at night, tell nobody where their ground is, and do not entirely trust one another. One of them talks to his dog; another talks as though making a will. And there is nobody coming after them to take the work on. Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw directed it together and shot it themselves. It screened at Sundance. The film explains nothing; it sets the camera down and waits, and the result is a series of fixed frames that look very nearly like paintings.
