What The U.S. vs. John Lennon Is About
By the time John Lennon settled in New York in 1971 he was no longer only a musician. He spoke at anti-war demonstrations, attacked Vietnam policy directly, and was turning into a figure with influence over young voters. The Nixon administration treated this as a security matter: the FBI opened a file, immigration began deportation proceedings, and a legal fight ran for years. The documentary by John Scheinfeld and David Leaf tells that case through archive footage, released FBI documents and witnesses from the period. Tariq Ali, Carl Bernstein, Gore Vidal and Yoko Ono speak. The film treats Lennon as a political actor rather than an artist; the music here is context. Who it's for: Anyone interested in Lennon, American politics of the 1960s and 1970s, and the history of state surveillance. Who it's not for: The telling stands on Lennon's side and gives no room to the opposing view. If you want the Beatles years, the film does not go there.
