What The Unforgiven Is About
A man who has finished his compulsory military service takes an anxious phone call from someone who once served under him and was also an old classmate. From there the film goes back to their days in the barracks: how the hierarchy works, how what a senior does to a junior becomes normal, and why good intentions are not enough inside that order. Yoon Jong-bin made it as his graduation project while an undergraduate at Chung-Ang University, basing it on his own service, and he appears in it himself. It is also Ha Jung-woo’s first major role. It took the FIPRESCI and NETPAC awards at Busan in 2005 and then played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes. It remains one of the few South Korean films to open the question of military service directly.
