What The United Way Is About
The documentary runs through the story of Manchester United from its modest beginnings to its present global scale. Eric Cantona presents it, and alongside the archive footage come figures such as Bobby Charlton, George Best, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. The frame it works in is stated openly: this is a celebration, made for supporters. What sits inside that frame is worth something anyway, the bond between a football team, a city, and that city's class. Mat Hodgson's 2021 film is not a critical portrait and never pretends to be one.
