What The Vanishing Prairie Is About
From Disney's True-Life Adventures series: the American prairie as it was when bison, elk, prairie dogs and pronghorn moved across it in herds. It was filmed over months in Yellowstone, at Wind Cave and in Wisconsin, following animals giving birth, hunting and preparing for winter. The 1954 film won the Academy Award for best documentary. It also had a fight of its own: New York's censors demanded that a sequence showing a bison giving birth be cut, and the ruling was reversed after objections. It is watched now both as early wildlife filmmaking and as a document of how Disney chose to narrate nature.
