What The Voyage of Captain Fracassa Is About
Seventeenth century France. A travelling theatre company puts up at the ruined castle of a young, impoverished baron. The baron joins the company and takes to the road, playing on stage the braggart character called Captain Fracasse, and his own life and the role he plays start to run into each other. Adapted from Theophile Gautier's novel of 1863. Ettore Scola shows the commedia dell'arte tradition, the life backstage and the poverty of the players together. Massimo Troisi plays Pulcinella, with a young Vincent Perez and Emmanuelle Beart in the cast.
