What The Waiting Room Is About
The documentary goes behind the doors of an American public hospital trying to care for a community of largely uninsured patients. How patients, administrators and caregivers each cope with disease, with bureaucracy and with hard choices is set out as a flow compressed into a single day. It was shot at Highland Hospital in Oakland over two months in 2010, and a hundred and seventy five hours of material took fourteen months to edit. Peter Nicks directed the eighty minute production in an observational manner, moving through the voices of the people themselves rather than a narrator. It was shortlisted for an Academy Award and won the Truer Than Fiction prize at the Independent Spirit Awards.
