What The War Is Over Is About

France, August 1944. The Germans are pulling back and the Allies are coming in. Two French boys run away from home and come across a German soldier on the road. None of them fully understands the others, and the three of them set off toward Lyon together. What is an adventure for the children is a question of survival for the soldier. Jean-Loup Hubert tells the last weeks of the war from a child's eye level and draws nobody as an enemy. Richard Bohringer leads it, and the two boys are played by the director's own sons. It finds a rare register among French films about the war: no heroism, no ideology, just three people who met on a road with a war ending behind them.
