What The Way I Spent the End of the World Is About
Bucharest, 1989, the last year of the dictatorship. Eva lives with her parents and her seven-year-old brother Lalalilu. When she and her boyfriend accidentally break a bust of Ceausescu at school, she is made to confess before a disciplinary committee, expelled, and sent to a reform school. There she meets Andrei and decides to leave the country with him. Lalalilu concludes that Ceausescu is the reason his sister wants to go, and works out a plan with his schoolfriends to kill him. Catalin Mitulescu's film is one of the early works of the Romanian New Wave. It tells the regime's final year not through fear but through daily life: queues, power cuts, denunciations, sentences spoken quietly. Dorotheea Petre won the best actress prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes for the role.
