What The Wayward Bus Is About
Victor Vicas’s 1957 film adapts John Steinbeck’s 1947 novel. On a bus running from California toward Mexico, passengers who do not know each other are made to face their own shortcomings as the road deteriorates: a burlesque dancer, an alcoholic woman, a travelling salesman. The worse the journey gets, the less the story each of them tells about themselves holds together. The dancer, played by Jayne Mansfield, is usually named as the most seriously regarded performance of her career, with Joan Collins and Dan Dailey alongside. The novel had circulated for years attached to other directors and other stars before it was finally made with this cast.
