What The Well Is About
In a racially mixed American town, a five year old Black girl falls unseen into a forgotten well on her way to school. With nothing else to go on, the police follow a report that she was seen with a white stranger, and rumour spreads fast; before the man is even found the town has tried and convicted him. The first half of the film is about how a disappearance deepens the division in a town, and the second about what happens once the truth comes out. Leo C. Popkin and Russell Rouse directed the eighty six minute film together, and it was nominated for Academy Awards for original screenplay and for editing, with cinematography by Ernest Laszlo and music by Dimitri Tiomkin.
