A young man called Kesha starts work in a kindergarten. The premise was odd for its moment, and all the comedy comes out of it: a lad who has not finished growing up himself, put in charge of small children. Vladimir Grammatikov’s first feature holds a particular place among Soviet family films because it treats the children as intelligent and real rather than as decoration. It became the role Sergei Prokhanov is still remembered for. The film was a large commercial success, reaching forty-seven million viewers in 1979. Aleksandr Misharin and Andrey Veytsler wrote it, and Lev Ragozin shot it. Much of its charm comes from how little the children are asked to perform.
