The documentary sets two camps side by side. The first is the hard training young women go through for weeks in preparation for the Miss India pageant; the second is a summer camp run by the women’s wing of the Hindu nationalist movement, where discipline and faith are taught in equal measure. The film follows the paths of two young women, one competing in the pageant, the other saying she is ready to kill and to die for her beliefs. Nisha Pahuja’s ninety minute Canadian production, which she wrote and directed, shows the two ends of a period in which India is changing quickly. It was named best documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2012 and best Canadian documentary at Hot Docs.
