What Theory of Obscurity: A Film About the Residents Is About
The documentary tells the story of The Residents, a sound and video collective that has been working for more than forty years and whose members are still unknown. The group always appears masked and costumed, treating the concealment of their identities not as a mystery game but as part of how they work, and at no point have they turned into what the market expected. The film follows that stubbornness and the large following it produced. In Don Hardy Jr.’s eighty seven minute American production, Matt Groening, Les Claypool, Penn Jillette, Jerry Harrison and Gary Panter all speak. It was completed in 2015 and asks what secrecy can actually do for an artist.
