There Will Be No More Night

Eleonore Weber's French documentary is made from footage recorded by the thermal cameras of military helicopters. The recordings belong to American and French units serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria and had leaked online. The film interprets these images. A voiceover describes what we see and asks what we cannot; whether the people on screen are carrying weapons or tools is often unclear, and the decision is taken inside that uncertainty. The argument is that sight itself is a weapon. Night vision technology removed darkness without increasing the capacity of the gaze to distinguish; the sentence in the title says both things at once. Who it's for: those interested in image theory and documentaries on modern warfare. Who it's not for: viewers who do not want to watch real deaths; the film shows them directly.
