What They Call Us Misfits Is About
Stefan Jarl and Jan Lindqvist's 1968 documentary follows a group of young people living on the margins of society in Stockholm. At the centre are Kenneth and Gustav, neither of them yet twenty, both of them having fallen out of school, out of work and through a series of youth detention homes. The camera stays with them on the street, in the park, in each other's flats. What made the film shocking at the time is that the directors pass no judgement. Drugs, drink and fighting are not offered as cautionary examples, and the boys are neither pitied nor romanticised. They speak in their own words and explain themselves why they dropped out of the picture the welfare state was proud of. Jarl went back and filmed the same two men years later, and this documentary is the first part of that trilogy.
