What This Divided State Is About
The documentary follows the row that broke out when Utah Valley State College invited the documentary maker Michael Moore to speak shortly before the 2004 election. The college sits in one of the most conservative counties in the United States, and the opposition to the invitation went far beyond what anyone expected; just as surprising was the support that came from students and townspeople previously written off as apathetic. The argument grew in the media and in public meetings, and death threats, hate mail, offers of money and lawsuits all played out in front of the camera. Steven Greenstreet’s first film uses no narration; across its eighty odd minutes both sides appear in their own words. It was released on 22 July 2005.
