The film follows Elvis Presley's life from birth to death: childhood in Memphis, the first recordings at Sun Records, the rise on television, the army, the Hollywood years, the television comeback of 1968, the Las Vegas period and the last years. Most of the material used is real: concert footage, home movies, television recordings and the people close to him speaking. There are staged scenes in between; several actors play Elvis at different ages, and those sections are woven into the archive footage. The method was argued about, because it is not always clear which image is real and which is performed. Against that, the film's strongest quality is that the last years are not hidden: the weight, the pills and the exhaustion on stage are plainly visible.
